The "Serra do Mar" section of that railway had a funicular system, which literally hoisted the cars by an endless rope. The photo shows one of the 0-4-0 tram-like steam brake-vans used in this section. Such engines produce a lot of smoke, so that they sometimes appear to be on fire! This locomotion system was erradicated in the early eighties, being substituted by a rack system. Photo extracted from the book Great Railway Journeys of the World, by Max Wade-Matthews.
