A German Krauss-Maffei ML 4000 C-C diesel-hydraulic locomotive. The E.F. Vitória a Minas bought 16 locomotives of this kind, numbered from #701 to 706, in 1966 and 1969. These 4,000 HP (gross)/3,600 HP (continuous) locomotives were the most powerful units for use in metric gauge at that time. They had a Voith hydraulic transmission with hydrodynamic brake, which provided these beasts with a maximum speed of 78 km/h. Unfortunately they were excessively powerful: they frequently slipped over the rails, virtually burning them. This photo is courtesy of Rudi Heinisch, from Munich, Germany.
