OSW C-420 #478 in CASO heritage paint

In 1980, Delaware & Hudson C-420 #410 got into a wreck which crunched its low short hood, and got a replacement hood from a (high nosed) Norfolk & Western C-420. When that nose was cut down, the corner notches were left in place.

After the Parsons Vale Lines merger in 1984, #410 was renumbered to #478, but was otherwise left alone. It operated on the D&H for many years after the merger, but was eventually pushed off the system by the march of electrification, and ended up working for the Ontario Southwestern in the mid 2010s.

In 2022, it went into the shops to be remanufactured into a C-420m with an AC drivetrain and a Cummins QSK60, and was repainted into a Canada Southern heritage paint scheme after the rebuild. It operates today on the OSW’s dieselised branches in the northern Ontario panhandle.
