The Cometa (Comet) unit train, running from Santos to São Paulo, still in the sea level but approaching Serra do Mar, the hilly country between Baixada Santista and the São Paulo state highlands. This train, that just departed from the Piaçagüera station, is using the Serra Velha line; the other funicular line, Serra Nova, can be seen in the top of the photo. The E.F. Santos a Jundiaí had two funicular lines, the first one built during the original railroad construction (Serra Velha), in the 1860's, and the other in the 1900's (Serra Nova), as the freight volume increased very much at that time, specially due to the expanding coffee culture in the São Paulo state. Photo originally edited in the book Traçado de Ferrovias (Railroad Construction), by Jerônimo Monteiro Filho and edited in 1955. Copy courtesy of Hermes Yoiti Hinuy, from São Paulo SP.
