In 1996, all suburban lines in São Paulo city, of the Companhia Brasileira de Trens Urbanos - C.B.T.U. (Brazilian Company of Urban Trains) and Ferrovias Paulistas - FEPASA, where merged in a São Paulo state-owned company: Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos - C.P.T.M. (Paulista Company of Metropolitan Trains). This new company is trying to provide a better level of commuter service, including the purchasing of new and modern trains.
