This photo, shot in May 29, 1965, shows the Ouro Branco self-propelled train being pulled by a Baldwin AS-616 diesel-electric locomotive probably near the Samaritá or Paraitinga stations. The train is heading to São Paulo and had to be pulled by a locomotive because its motors were not powerful enough to negotiate the hilly country between the sea level and the São Paulo highlands, 800 meters above... Note that this section, in the Serra do Mar, had overhead wires at that time, but electric traction was not operational because the electrical power stations still were being built.
