This locomotive ALCO RSD-12, built by the Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW), a Canadian licensee of ALCO, was originally delivered to E.F. Central do Brasil in 1962. Ten units of this kind were then supplied; they originally have an ALCO 251 12-cylinder diesel motor. They were latter retrofitted at the General Electric works in Brazil, receiving new ALCO 251 motors built by Bombardier and then transfered to the E.F. Santos a Jundiaí. This photo, shot by Doug E. Cummings, shows the machine at the Piaçagüera station in October 31, 1992. At that time this kind of locomotive was used as a switching locomotive at that location, assembling and disassembling freight trains, respectively after and before the crossing of the rack section of Serra do Mar. This photo was originally published at the R.F.F.S.A. Page of the Alco World. Information about this locomotive was kindly supplied by Maurício Torres and Cid José Beraldo, through E.F. Brasil, the first electronic list for discussion about the Brazilian railroads. Additional info can be found in the book A Era Diesel na EFCB ("The Diesel Age at the Central do Brasil Railroad"), by Eduardo Coelho and João Bosco Setti.
