Suburban electric stainless steel car of the Estrada de Ferro Santos-Jundiaí designed by The Budd Company being shipped to Brazil. They were named here as the 100 Series and still are used in three-car units consisting of one power car and two trailers. The 34 motorized cars were built by the manufacturer in Philadelphia, U.S.A., and the 56 trailers were built by MAFERSA in Brazil using parts supplied by The Budd Company, in 1957. They were intended for use at the commuter lines of E.F. Santos and Jundiaí and, eventually, in the São Paulo- Santos route. As the final section of that line was not electrified, these units were pulled there by ALCO RS-1 diesel-electric locomotives. They originally had gas-powered generators to feed lighting and auxiliary equipment when they run in such non-electrified lines. A recent revamped version of such cars can be found at the C.P.T.M. page. Photo originally published in the 1966 edition of the Car and Locomotive Cyclopaedia.
