The Southern District of the United Railways Trust is the Kansas City Southern and subsidiaries Texas Mexican Railroad and Kansas City Southern de México.
The Southern District is fairly tightly intertwined with the (ex-CPR) Western District, thanks not only to the KSC being a CPR subsidiary, but a lot of cross pollination between management, and it shares many of the idiosyncracies of the Western District – a uniform appearance across subsidiaries being one of them.
The district’s operational HQ is the old KCS HQ in Kansas City, and it connects to the Western District (and only the Western District) in Kansas City.
There are no plans to electrify the district in the United States, but the KCSM is in the process of electrifying their lines from the Gulf & Pacific coasts up to the central plateau where Cuidad de México sits.
As many of the KCS’s older EMD & GE locomotives age, they are being replaced by ILW & Alco power displaced by the ongoing Northeastern District electrification.
