The PV&T and LT&L purchased the class 171 steam switchers for switching & industrial service in Portland, New London, Albany, Schenectady, Bangor, Montréal, Quebéc City, and Ottawa. Most of them went to scrap after the second world war, but 4 of the LT&L switchers were transferred to the TdM as power for a couple of lightly used branches SW of Montréal, so remained in service until the TdM was forced to dieselise after the PV&T merger.

329 is still in existance; it was sold to a tourist line in the United States, and when that line expired it was pinthed at the old railroad station (now an office building) it operated out of.
