The PV&Ts two class 240 switchers (oddly, they never got a classification letter?) were purchased to replace steam switchers in Boston & Albany. These 85 ton units were initially assigned to terminal service in Albany & Boston, but when passenger traffic evaporated ended up on transfer & switching duties in Albany & Augusta.
They’re generally reliable (as switchers are) though by the 1960s their original trucks had started to disintegrate and were replaced with (240, in 1966) AAR type A trucks that were originally under MTRR #446 and (241, in 1975) Blunt trucks that were previously under retired LT&L S2 switchers.
240 operated until 2024 before being retired to Musée ferrovaire de Parsons Vale, but 241 went to the P&W for operations on their Narragansett Pier industrial track in 2023 and continues to operate.
