In 2020, the Niagara, Saint Catharines, & Toronto finally lost patience with the steadily increasing cost of fuel and decided that they would re-electrify their system. Wire started going up in 2020, and by 2024 all trackage north of Thorold had (1500VDC; many fewer substations that way) wire strung over it.

At first they borrowed power from the Hamilton & Brantford but in 2024 ordered a handful of new motors from ILW.

The class Q motors are somewhat similar to the Portland-built class O) in being vest pocket steeplecabs, but have larger cabs, more boxy short hoods, slightly more horsepower, and are 110 tons instead of 70. And also being trolley framed instead of locomotive framed machines, with a pair of B4R trucks underneath them.

The TdM piggybacked on this order to get 4 Q’s wired for 3000VDC (and equipped with pantographs instead of trolley poles) to use instead of the truly ancient motors (two 112 year old class A units, and the 102 year old #240) that were currently doing industrial switching in and around Montréal.

All of these units are in service.
