Pioneer Valley class J #614 in Pinsly Red

In 2022, the Central Vermont purchased the Pioneer Valley Railroad from the Pinsly Railroad Company, and more-or-less promptly electrified it (the “more or less” came from local NIMBYs getting all worked up about the overhead wires, which delayed the electrification until 2024, when the EPA suggested that the existing leased EMDs weren’t even slightly close to the current emissions standards.)

As purchased, the line only operated from Holyoke to Westfield & Southampton, but after those segments were electrified work started on rehabilitating the abandoned-since-1987 Southampton to Easthampton line.

It currently operated with class Jm motors #611 & 614, though another motor will be needed when the line to Easthampton is in operation.
